Crow Wood Leisure
Crow Wood is a luxury hotel and leisure facility set in 40 acres of private parkland in Burnley, Lancashire.
The complex boasts 76 bedrooms, wedding and conference facilities, award winning restaurants, an equestrian centre along with a spa and leisure facilities.
As part of a £2 million refurbishment, Crow Wood Leisure have expanded the gym offering by developing a state-of-the-art yoga, aerobics, and immersive spin studio. Other areas for cardio and strength training were also within the scope of the renovation.
Pettit Singleton Associates were enlisted to undertake the mechanical and electrical specification of the project. Steon enjoyed a close collaboration them and were involved in conceptualising and designing of the new lighting layout throughout the leisure facilities.
The aim of this major refurbishment was to create a striking and energising space for members to enjoy. It was essential that the lighting design had an inspirational impact on members whilst reflecting the affluence and reputation of the Crow Wood estate.
Steon supplied the Tempo Line LED for the spin studio. This is a linear system of luminaires specifically developed for such an application. The luminaires leverage pixel lighting technology to deliver dynamic and pulsating waves of light matching the tempo of music during a session. Crow Wood Estates requested that RGBW Zagato® extrusion be incorporated into the step edges within the spin studio and hoped these would similarly colour change in tandem with the Tempo Line LED. Simple in premise but to achieve this the solution needed to be technically complex. These two solutions operate on different control protocols, DMX and DALI, however, by incorporating a Madrix system with a touch screen we were able to bridge the two control interfaces to enable the luminaires to be cohesive in their behaviour.
The Madrix system had several other lighting scenes pre-programmed to ensure the area remained versatile. One lends itself to yoga, another for aerobics, we also included for an all-white scene for cleaning and maintenance purposes.
Suspended and recessed Niko Line luminaires were utilised extensively through the other areas of the facility. In the interest of minimising discomfort glare the Niko Line luminaires were supplied with nanoprism diffusers. Petrus Mini Downlights were similarly utilised through circulation areas.
The exteriors of the premises are serviced by Harrier Midi wall luminaires, with a dusk-till-dawn photocell. These units are perfectly suited for a rural development such as this with zero upward light distribution and therefore minimal light pollution.
The project presented challenges, the areas needed to completely functional in the interest of safety and compliance, whilst also delivering on striking aesthetics, with the spin studio being the showcase of the lighting installation.
Now leveraging the latest in lighting technology, Crow Wood Leisure also benefit from reduced energy consumption and resulting reduced operational costs, an inherent benefit of LED technologies, along with extended life expectancies in excess of 50,000 hours and disruption to classes and services delivered by the estate.

“The new lighting installation, and the refurbishment as a whole, has been very well received by both our members and our team. The trainers are getting familiar with the new spin studio and appreciate the added dimension it brings to their training sessions. The dynamics lighting does make for a very engaging session and we have received encouraging feedback since reopening.”
